The project

The new unit is the second urban unit of the Achillion Nephrology Center, which was founded in 2013 by Alexandros and Achilleas Tourkantonis and has been present in the center of Thessaloniki, at 8 Mitropoleos Street, since 2015. Consistent with its growth strategy, always within the urban fabric, the Achillion Nephrology Center chose to expand into eastern Thessaloniki with a new base at 17 Ethnikis Antistaseos Street, identifying a gap in the provision of hemodialysis services in the area and listening to the needs of its own patients.

In fact, this investment was implemented during the difficult period of the pandemic, which, however, highlighted the even greater need for high-level health services. Upon the full development of the second unit, the Achillion Nephrology Center will reach a staff of more than 100 people.

The symbolism of the building and the radical renovation

The new unit, with its characteristic terracotta color that makes its presence felt on Ethnikis Antistaseos Street, is accompanied by a certain symbolism: it is housed in an emblematic building of the city, the one that for years hosted the “Ellinikos Vorras” newspaper, bringing it back to life. The privately owned building underwent a radical renovation of all levels and structural reinforcement, while an additional floor was added, all to support its highly demanding new use. In fact, the building’s design included, beyond thermal insulation, ventilated ecological panels, as part of the nephrology center’s environmental consciousness. Great emphasis was also placed on the requirement for free and unobstructed movement of patients and stretchers. Indicative of the effort for the absolute comfort of dialysis patients is the installation of an external elevator to cover a distance of just a few meters, so as to eliminate even the slightest possibility of inconvenience.
